Agnes Janinek (Janinek) - Class Of 1940 VIEW PROFILE

Agnes M. Janinek, 88, a resident of Clarks Summit Senior Living, formerly of Jessup, died Wednesday evening at AseraCare Hospice at Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville.

Born in Jessup, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Podrasky Janinek. She was a graduate of St. Michael's School, Jessup; St. Cyril Academy, Danville; and Lackawanna Business College, Scranton; and attended George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She was a member of St. Michael's Church, Queen of Angels Parish, Jessup, where she served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, Parish Council member and RCIA director. She was actively involved in St. Michael's School, Jessup, where she served as librarian and substitute teacher. She served as secretary for the LPSCU, Branch 8, in Jessup, and attended many conventions throughout the United States. During a federal government career that spanned 42 years, Agnes worked as administrative assistant to the assistant secretary of the Air Force and to three Atomic Energy commissioners. She served as an executive secretary in the Kennedy White House and was the assistant to Dr. John von Neumann, who was an award-winning mathematician and creator of the first computer systems. From 1961 to 1971, she was the executive assistant to Nobel Prize winner and Atomic Energy Commissioner Dr. Glenn Seaborg. During that time, she was assigned to the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy to research the future energy resources of the United States. She was a delegate to the first nuclear disarmament conference held by the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union for six months in 1963, in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1971, she was transferred to the newly created Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where she served as liaison officer for the National Governor's Association, the State Legislatures and served as a board member of the State Radiation Control Program Directors. In 1967, she was nominated by the Atomic Energy Commission as Federal Woman of the Year and was awarded the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Meritorious Service Medal in 1979.

The family of Agnes would like to thank Dr. Anthony Freda and the staff members of Southern Care and AseraCare Hospice at Mid-Valley for their compassionate care. We would also like to thank the staff and residents of the Clarks Summit Senior Living who made Agnes feel at home during her stay.

Surviving are five sisters, Marie Homentosky, Jessup; Veronica LaMacchia, Lansing, Mich.; Josephine Palmer and husband, Jack, Palm City, Fla.; Ann Simeone, Jackson, Tenn.; and Barbara Smith and husband, Dan, Silver Spring, Md.; a brother, Joseph Janinek and wife, Patronella, Carbondale; three godchildren, Jean Fetcho, Joanne Kingsley and John Palmer; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Joseph Homentosky, James LaMacchia and Ralph Simeone.

The funeral will be Monday from the Louis M. Margotta Funeral Home, 511 Church St., Jessup, with Mass to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, Queen of Angels Parish. Interment, St. Michael's Cemetery, Jessup.
