Josephine Pehowic (De Paolo) - Class Of 1945

DANVILLE — Josephine M. DePaolo, 86, of Bernard Lane, passed away late Sunday evening, Dec. 8, 2013, at Emmanuel Nursing Center, Danville. She had been in failing health for the past year. She was born March 19, 1927, in Danville, a daughter of the late John A. and Esther M. (Steffey) Pehowic. Josephine worked for Wernersville State Hospital, Reading, as a medical librarian for 42 years, retiring in 1990. After retirement, she moved back to this area in 2007. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Danville, and when she lived in Wernersville, she and her husband were very active in the Catholic church in that community. She was the state secretary for the Service Employees International Union and also wrote many grant applications for hospital libraries. Josephine enjoyed art, loved reading, especially the Smithsonian and National Geographic magazines. She was very interested in politics and was a giving, caring and loving person. She is survived by one sister, Helen V. Faux, of Danville. She was preceded in death by her husband, John DePaolo, who died in 2003, ending a marital span of 56 years; three brothers, Robert, Eugene and Albert Pehowic; and two sisters, Elizabeth Klinger and Irene Hendricks. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated  at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 18 Center St., Danville, with the Rev. Tri Luong, her pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Hubert Cemetery, Danville. At Josephine’s request, there will be no viewing. Contributions in her memory may be made to the SPCA, 2801 Bloom Road, Danville, PA 17821. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Allen R. Horne Funeral Home, 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa.
